Wood turning is an activity that lends itself to creative expression and joy in ways that few other activities render. It is tremendously rewarding to watch shapes come alive before your very eyes. Despite this few woodworkers seem to be turning. Some woodworkers claim that it is hard to get started. But this is only an excuse. In reality wood turning requires only five basic tools that can help a woodworker to get going.
So, what exactly are the five tools? The tools vital for wood turning are the diamond-parting tool (so called because of diamond shaped blade cross section), the roughing gouge, most importantly the bowl gouge, an oval skew which has rounded edges, and the roundnose scraper.
It is advisable to spend some extra money to get high speed lathe chisels of top quality from Sheffield of England. There are two reasons for this. The first reason is that their edges hold much longer than high-carbon steel. The second reason is that if an edge is slightly blued when sharpening with a grinder, the chisel continues to perform properly.
For a woodworker starting out, an ideal turning project could be an object that's locked in between a ball bearing centre and a drive spur. This is known as spindle turning. To begin with the lathe must be set to the lowest speed. The workpiece should then be mounted between the centres. The tool rest must then be adjusted as close as possible to the workpiece. The turning square should be rotated manually, ensuring that none of the points come in contact with the tool rest. The next step is to perfect the stance. It is a good idea for woodworkers to remove their jewelry and rings before commencing a project. Sleeves can also be rolled up as an extra precaution. A face shield provides added protection while turning.
To illustrate the turning process, consider working on a candlestick pedestal. A turning blank for such a project will measure 16" in length and 3" square. The bottom segment remains square. Before turning on the lathe make sure the tool rest is adjusted so that the lathe skew's cutting point is exactly at or just on top of the centerline.
Using a 1/2" bowl gently make a sweeping cove cut. Ensure that the tool rest has been adjusted and is locked to permit the chisel's cutting edge to be exactly or slightly on top of the centerline. The bowl gouge flute should be tilted marginally towards the right.
You will perhaps notice the spalting beginning to be seen on your workpiece. These colours and the zone lines are those of decaying wood and are seriously hazardous to your health. It is advisable to wear a dust mask while working on splated wood, more so when you are sanding, there can be severe allergic reactions to wood dust. After the corners have been sheared and you have formed the sweeping cove, using a 1-1/4" roughing gouge, remove all the rough edges to create a cylinder just on top of the base.
Using the diamond parting 3/16" thick tool, the pedestal of the candlestick should be accented. Cut three slots identical to each other in the workpiece. Now these slots should be turned to three beads, which are just bumps.
The ½" wide roundhouse scraper is the fifth lathe chisel. Scrapers are versatile and can make just any cut imaginable. Woodworkers having trouble with shearing techniques can use a scraper to obtain the profile and then add details using a parting tool.
Using these tools a woodworkers can turn their own masterpieces in a short span of time and have fun along the way. It's also best to keep the project under wraps, so no one knows what's being turned - just in case the shape changes to something entirely new in the end.
