Tulum’s Charming Side

In the east coast of Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea, in the state of Quintana Roo, and just an hour South of Cancun, Mexico, Tulum can be found. It is considered as one of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites. This site may have been formerly also known by the name Zama, meaning city of Dawn.

Among some of the spectacular buildings at the site is the Temple of the Frescoes. The facade of the temple is placed with figurines of the Maya “diving god” or Venus deity decorative. This “diving god” is also illustrated in the Temple of the Diving God in the central precinct of the site. Temple of the Descending God is accessible. If there are not too many people around it's a wonderful feeling to sit in the sun on the temple's platform with the waves crashing below and imagine what it must have been like years ago. So much for a bunch of old stone buildings, Tulum is a particularly impressive site, perched as it is high on top of limestone cliffs that spill down to the turquoise waters of the Caribbean below. Both coastal and land routes converged at Tulum which is apparent by the number of artifacts found near the area that show contacts all over Central America and Central Mexico. Tulum also served as a port of call for the maritime commerce that thrived along the coast. Typical exported goods include feathers and copper objects that came from inland sources. Salt and textiles were also among some of the good things in Tulum.
