Although my wife and I have not traveled with children on cruises, we were very fortunate to meet and talk to a number of parents who did bring their children on the cruise with them as well as go on kid friendly cruises, the most notable one offered by Disney.

What we learned was that there are a number of activities for children of all ages. I will do my best to cover all the basis here on what exactly there is to do for your children, including those hard to keep satisfied teenagers.

The cruise ships I have been on have a nice selection of kid friendly programs. For the younger children, you can enroll them in a kids clubs (they are called different things on different ships, but for our purposes here, I will call them a kids clubs). These are more for the younger, 5 to 10 crowd. These clubs are supervised by extremely friendly, polite and courteous hosts. They take good care of the children, making sure they are occupied with a lot of arts and crafts and from what I have been told, a lot of educational programs.

They do a good job of mixing education and fun, a nice combination that you want to hear about, especially if you are parent that worries about what they are doing when you are not around.

One of the most fun surprises was when the children, who were enrolled in the kids program throughout the week, dressed up as pirates and put on a small show for the adults during dinner. It was very enjoyable, and the cruise crew did a great job getting the kids ready in such a short period of time.

So what about those teenagers? Well for starters, most cruise ships have arcade style game rooms. Most are equipped with everything from air hockey to pool tables (on some ships), to a wide variety of video games and other electronic gadgets and gizmo`s. If you are a parent (or a teenager) who may not like the electronic options, most cruise ships have rooms where you will find all sorts of board games, chess boards, checkers, puzzles and literally hundreds of other items to stay occupied.

If you (are lucky enough) have a child that loves to read, no problem with that either. Most cruise ships have wonderful libraries, with a lot of books to choose from.

Even with all the games, electronics and books, if you still have a child that wants more, that is not a problem. On the top deck, you will find miniature golf, volleyball, basketball courts, and some cruise lines offer rock climbing walls, with the newer mega ships offering body surfing on-board! How cool is that!

Other activities for kids include, on some ships, an ice-skating rink, scuba and swimming lessons, bingo for kids and of course, the pool.

Needless to say if you have children and still want to go on a cruise, there is plenty for you and your children to do. At the beginning of every cruise, the cruise director will tell everybody, one of the best things you can do on a cruise, is "to get involved." If you want to have a great time, you and your kids need to get involved with these activities. It will make the cruise vacation more enjoyable for both you and your children.

The Arts and Crafts movement was a reformist movement Inspired by the writings of John Ruskin and a romantic idealization of the craftsman taking pride in his personal handiwork. It was at its height between 1880-1910. In the United States, the terms American Craftsman or Craftsman style are often used to denote the style of architecture, interior design, and decorative arts that prevailed between the dominant eras of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, or roughly the period from 1910 to 1925.

The Arts and Crafts movement basically began as a search of authentic and meaningful styles for the 19th century and a reaction to the eclectic revival styles of the Victorian era and to the "soulless or heartless" styles of machine made "Industrial Revolution". Considering the machine to be the root cause of all repetitive and mundane evils, some of the protagonists of this movement turned entirely away from the use of machines and towards handcraft, which tended to concentrate their productions in the hands of sensitive but well-heeled patrons.

In 1861, the Arts and Crafts movement got its' biggest support when Morris founded Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co., a furniture, design and decorative accessories company that stressed time-honored craftsmanship and natural materials. The timing was perfect for in 1862 the London International Exhibition showcased never-before-seen Japanese arts and Crafts, which had an immediate effect on design. England quickly became enamored with this new look and began shedding the layers of Victorian clutter from its homes.

Ruskin also preached that work was meant to be joyous -- an idea that was lost on the growing multitude of factory workers who spent long hours toiling in poor conditions. This noble idea had its roots in the past when one's work was one's life and it was to become one of the Movement's basic tenets.

The Arts and Crafts soon died out but influentially conveyed the idea that craftsmanship and creativity can never be overpowered by the advent of machines and technology.

The French and the Belgians called it Art Nouveau or the New Art. This period of integrated art may have been short lasting a mere 24 years from 1890 to 1914, however, the influence of that time has continued to this day. They were considered ahead of their time then and their art was regarded as exciting and new.

The Paris World's Fair held in 1900 really was the defining moment for this particular art form as over 50 million people attended. As art dealer and entrepreneur he had opened a gallery in Paris in 1895 and called it L'Art Nouveau which gave the movement its name. Art Nouveau style could be identified by the flowing and curving lines which were apparent in everyday household items as well as architecture and furniture. Even women's fashions were created to reflect the new look.

Charles Rennie Macintosh as architect and furniture designer made furniture for specific spaces in the homes that he also designed. His architecture was so unique that equally unique furniture was required to fill the spaces. The traditional furniture available at the time would have appeared out of place in his homes. When Charles and his close friend, Herbie McNair met Margaret Macdonald and her sister, Frances, a very unusual, romantic and artistic liaison developed. All had studied art and would collaborate together on many projects. Together they formed a powerful alliance and were known as the Glasgow Four with far reaching effect. In 1896 they were invited to exhibit at the London Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition. Herbie and Frances married in 1899 and moved to Liverpool. In 1900 Charles and Margaret were married and in the same year Macintosh's architectural masterpiece, The Glasgow School of Art, was begun.

The great Frank Lloyd Wright is a wonderful example of someone who was influenced by the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts movements. He designed not only the buildings but also the furniture, stained glass windows and lamps which were an integral part of the overall design. His commercial success not to mention his commercial designs for everything from a gas station, places of worship and the Johnson Wax building to the Guggenheim Museum sealed his fate as America's favorite architect and icon of style! It is lucky for us that he was so prolific and left a lasting legacy for all to enjoy and draw inspiration from.

Antoni Gaudi of Spain had a limitless imagination and his buildings are a true testament to his creative energy and individual style. At first his undulating walls and fantastical creations were not well received as they were too unorthodox. Today, however, he is considered a genius and the irregular lines and one-of-a-kind architecture have been embraced. Thousands annually visit Barcelona for the sole purpose of seeing Gaudi's Familia Sagrada, Casa Mila & Park Guere.

Today, theme tours are very popular and many of the great cities of Europe have specialty tours with an emphasis placed on Art Nouveau style and architecture. Regarded by the locals as national treasures which they are only too proud to share and show off, Brussels, Prague and Riga in Latvia all have excellent examples of Art Nouveau design. And, as if you needed an excuse to visit these varied and interesting places, in the case of these cities it is like going to an open air museum. Of course, there are many other locations across Europe which, if you had the time, you would not want to miss; Paris, Vienna, and Turin could easily whet your appetite. This wave of creativity made its way around the world with Europe at the center.

George Orwell wrote Nineteen Eighty-Four in 1949, a dystopian novel setting forth the fears of an intrusively bureaucratized state of the future. “Big Brother is watching you!” And now I can find my lost dog with a GPS microchip implant. Truth be told, almost every technological advancement of our modern age has been foreseen in a fantasy or sci-fi novel, painting or movie of some kind. Lucky guesses? Or, does science really copy the fantastic developments of the artistic pioneers, painters, and writers?

Where is this going?

Well, I am not too sure at this point, but I can tell you one thing, technological advancement can sure make life easier. It can be said that we fantasize for pure pleasure and invent for production. We are a society of development and consumption. We push forward every day in order to make life more beautiful, or at least that is the goal.

The idea of an embedded microchip (VeriChip) that contains all our medical records, connections with our financial systems and is trackable could sure make life safe and easy. Yet it seems to potentially open a whole new realm of corruption and ethical argumentation. There are already loads of websites spouting disagreements with the useage of the “VeriChip” implant in humans.

In essence, a VeriChip is a small radio transmitter about the size of a grain of rice that is injected under a person's skin. It transmits a unique ID number whenever it is within a few feet of a special receiver unit. The system was designed to replace ID systems such as company ID cards and medical emergency ID tags. It is speculated that such a chip could also be used to replace driver licenses, passports, and credit cards.

Embrace or Run Away?

Well, as far as crime is concerned, we could practically say good-bye to kidnapping and robbery. But along with that, there goes privacy and the whole innocent until proven guilty ideal. No need to concern yourself with where your spouse really was last night, or where your child is at the moment.

Now what about the Book of Revelations and all that about the “Mark of the Beast”? Since the FDA approoved the use of the implant for medical records last October, there have been websites popping up all over telling tales of disdain in the Christian eye.

Truth be told, there are numerous examples of these chips being used today in everyday life. Millions of animals around the world have been chipped for medical purposes. In Mexico, city officials have been chipped for security reasons and to prevent kidnapping. I am a mere network engineer that runs a web design and tech support company and seems to think that future and science-fiction are getting pretty well acquainted.

From Big Brother to the Mark of the Beast, from safe, efficient living to streamilining the medical and financial world, we are on the verge of advancements so great, that Artists are painting reality right before our eyes. We are living in sci-fi and witnessing what our ancestors only dreamed of.
