Though many casual observers tend to generalize "traditional" African art, the continent is full of peoples, societies, and civilizations, each with a unique visual special culture. The definition also includes the art of the African Diasporas, such as the art of African Americans. Despite this diversity, there are some unifying artistic themes when considering the totality of the visual culture from the continent of Africa.

* Emphasis on the human figure: The human figure has always been a the primary subject matter for most African art, and this emphasis even influenced certain European traditions. For example in the fifteenth century Portugal traded with the Sapi culture near the Ivory Coast in West Africa, who created elaborate ivory saltcellars that were hybrids of African and European designs, most notably in the addition of the human figure (the human figure typically did not appear in Portuguese saltcellars). The human figure may symbolize the living or the dead, may reference chiefs, dancers, or various trades such as drummers or hunters, or even may be an anthropomorphic representation of a god or have other votive function. Another common theme is the inter-morphosis of human and animal.

* Visual abstraction: African artworks tend to favor visual abstraction over naturalistic representation. This is because many African artworks generalize stylistic norms. Ancient Egyptian art, also usually thought of as naturalistic depiction, makes use of highly abstracted and regimented visual canons, especially in painting, as well as the use of different colors to represent the qualities and characteristics of an individual being depicted.

* Nonlinear scaling: Often a small part of an African design will look similar to a larger part, such as the diamonds at different scales in the Kasai pattern at right. Louis Senghor, Senegal’s first president, referred to this as “dynamic symmetry.” William Fagg, the British art historian, compared it to the logarithmic mapping of natural growth by biologist D’Arcy Thompson. More recently it has been described in terms of fractal geometry.

* Emphasis on sculpture: African artists tend to favor three-dimensional artworks over two-dimensional works. Even many African paintings or cloth works were meant to be experienced three-dimensionally. House paintings are often seen as a continuous design wrapped around a house, forcing the viewer to walk around the work to experience it fully; while decorated cloths are worn as decorative or ceremonial garments, transforming the wearer into a living sculpture.

* Emphasis on performance art: An extension of the utilitarianism and three-dimensionality of traditional African art is the fact that much of it is crafted for use in performance contexts, rather than in static ones. For example, masks and costumes very often are used in communal, ceremonial contexts, where they are "danced." Most societies in Africa have names for their masks, but this single name incorporates not only the sculpture, but also the meanings of the mask, the dance associated with it, and the spirits that reside within. In African thought, the three cannot be differentiated.

Year in Review: January-April 2009

Although my wife and I have not traveled with children on cruises, we were very fortunate to meet and talk to a number of parents who did bring their children on the cruise with them as well as go on kid friendly cruises, the most notable one offered by Disney.

What we learned was that there are a number of activities for children of all ages. I will do my best to cover all the basis here on what exactly there is to do for your children, including those hard to keep satisfied teenagers.

The cruise ships I have been on have a nice selection of kid friendly programs. For the younger children, you can enroll them in a kids clubs (they are called different things on different ships, but for our purposes here, I will call them a kids clubs). These are more for the younger, 5 to 10 crowd. These clubs are supervised by extremely friendly, polite and courteous hosts. They take good care of the children, making sure they are occupied with a lot of arts and crafts and from what I have been told, a lot of educational programs.

They do a good job of mixing education and fun, a nice combination that you want to hear about, especially if you are parent that worries about what they are doing when you are not around.

One of the most fun surprises was when the children, who were enrolled in the kids program throughout the week, dressed up as pirates and put on a small show for the adults during dinner. It was very enjoyable, and the cruise crew did a great job getting the kids ready in such a short period of time.

So what about those teenagers? Well for starters, most cruise ships have arcade style game rooms. Most are equipped with everything from air hockey to pool tables (on some ships), to a wide variety of video games and other electronic gadgets and gizmo`s. If you are a parent (or a teenager) who may not like the electronic options, most cruise ships have rooms where you will find all sorts of board games, chess boards, checkers, puzzles and literally hundreds of other items to stay occupied.

If you (are lucky enough) have a child that loves to read, no problem with that either. Most cruise ships have wonderful libraries, with a lot of books to choose from.

Even with all the games, electronics and books, if you still have a child that wants more, that is not a problem. On the top deck, you will find miniature golf, volleyball, basketball courts, and some cruise lines offer rock climbing walls, with the newer mega ships offering body surfing on-board! How cool is that!

Other activities for kids include, on some ships, an ice-skating rink, scuba and swimming lessons, bingo for kids and of course, the pool.

Needless to say if you have children and still want to go on a cruise, there is plenty for you and your children to do. At the beginning of every cruise, the cruise director will tell everybody, one of the best things you can do on a cruise, is "to get involved." If you want to have a great time, you and your kids need to get involved with these activities. It will make the cruise vacation more enjoyable for both you and your children.

If you have been doing all your embroidery by hand, then you know that it takes quite a bit of time, effort and patience to complete a single project. However, there is a very easy way to finish your work a lot faster. All you need to do is look for free machine designs.

Free machine designs are simply patterns that you can bring to life by using a standard sewing machine. You don't have to go out and purchase an expensive machine in order to use free machine designs.

The traditional sewing machine will work just fine as long as you are adept in maneuvering the fabric. You also need to have certain equipments if you want to use free machine designs in your needlework.

The equipments we are talking about are just six basic tools and you do not need to spend a huge amount for them. We have listed them for you so you can prepare them before embarking on your project.

1. Sewing Machine

If you want to use free machine designs, you would obviously need to have a sewing machine. As mentioned earlier, this machine does not have to be one of those state-of-the-art digital devices that could burn a hole in your pocket.

A traditional sewing machine will do as long as it has a zigzag capability. Machines that allow you to lower its dog's teeth are much better because you will be able to create zigzag patterns more efficiently with these machines.

2. Embroidery Hoop

This is an absolutely necessary tool when using free machine designs. Embroidery hoops can be purchased in any supplies shop.

3. Fabric

Practically any kind of cloth material can be used for free machine designs. The important thing to remember when buying your material is that it has to fit your embroidery hoop to a T. Having the right size of fabric is crucial to the overall appearance of your finished product so you have to measure the material precisely before you start stitching away.

4. Embroidery Foot

The embroidery foot is another essential tool when using free machine embroidery designs. It is basically a needle with a spring that holds the material down on your work station.

5. Thread

Naturally, you cannot do any free machine designs, or any kind of needlework for that matter, if you don't have the right kinds of thread. The type of thread needed is usually indicated on the patterns. The most commonly used threads for free machine embroidery designs are yarns made of polyester and rayon.

6. Stabilizer

This very helpful sewing tool keeps your material neat and orderly despite all the twisting and rearranging of the material. Having a stabilizer will make your work much faster and more comfortable.

Once you have prepared all these important tools, you can go ahead and start on your free machine. If you are a beginner, do not expect to achieve a perfect result the first time around. You might need a few rounds of practice before you master the controlling of your fabric as you work.

When you have gained enough skill, you will be able to enjoy creating many different designs with your machine. If you run out of free machine embroidery designs, you can always go to your embroidery supplies shop.

The French and the Belgians called it Art Nouveau or the New Art. This period of integrated art may have been short lasting a mere 24 years from 1890 to 1914, however, the influence of that time has continued to this day. The artists who were in vogue then are just as much in demand now: Alphonse Mucha; Gustav Klimt; & Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec to name just a few. They were considered ahead of their time then and their art was regarded as exciting and new.

The Paris World's Fair held in 1900 really was the defining moment for this particular art form as over 50 million people attended. Upon visiting Siegfried Bing's pavilion, their interest and enthusiasm spread. As art dealer and entrepreneur he had opened a gallery in Paris in 1895 and called it L'Art Nouveau which gave the movement its name. His pavilion was filled with every example of Art Design: wallpaper; fabrics; furniture; jewelry; glassware; and metalwork. Art Nouveau style could be identified by the flowing and curving lines which were apparent in everyday household items as well as architecture and furniture. Even women's fashions were created to reflect the new look.

Charles Rennie Macintosh as architect and furniture designer made furniture for specific spaces in the homes that he also designed. His architecture was so unique that equally unique furniture was required to fill the spaces. The traditional furniture available at the time would have appeared out of place in his homes. When Charles and his close friend, Herbie McNair met Margaret Macdonald and her sister, Frances, a very unusual, romantic and artistic liaison developed. All had studied art and would collaborate together on many projects. Together they formed a powerful alliance and were known as the Glasgow Four with far reaching effect. In 1896 they were invited to exhibit at the London Arts and Crafts Society Exhibition. Herbie and Frances married in 1899 and moved to Liverpool. In 1900 Charles and Margaret were married and in the same year Macintosh's architectural masterpiece, The Glasgow School of Art, was begun.

The great Frank Lloyd Wright is a wonderful example of someone who was influenced by the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts movements. He designed not only the buildings but also the furniture, stained glass windows and lamps which were an integral part of the overall design. His commercial success not to mention his commercial designs for everything from a gas station, places of worship and the Johnson Wax building to the Guggenheim Museum sealed his fate as America's favorite architect and icon of style! It is lucky for us that he was so prolific and left a lasting legacy for all to enjoy and draw inspiration from.

Antoni Gaudi of Spain had a limitless imagination and his buildings are a true testament to his creative energy and individual style. At first his undulating walls and fantastical creations were not well received as they were too unorthodox. Today, however, he is considered a genius and the irregular lines and one-of-a-kind architecture have been embraced. Thousands annually visit Barcelona for the sole purpose of seeing Gaudi's Familia Sagrada, Casa Mila & Park Guere.

Architectural Tours

Today, theme tours are very popular and many of the great cities of Europe have specialty tours with an emphasis placed on Art Nouveau style and architecture. Regarded by the locals as national treasures which they are only too proud to share and show off, Brussels, Prague and Riga in Latvia all have excellent examples of Art Nouveau design. And, as if you needed an excuse to visit these varied and interesting places, in the case of these cities it is like going to an open air museum. Of course, there are many other locations across Europe which, if you had the time, you would not want to miss; Paris, Vienna, and Turin could easily whet your appetite. This wave of creativity made its way around the world with Europe at the center.

There are over 10 processes involved to make a pottery, all of which are 100% handmade. The whole process will take around one month and some of them will take several months.

Luoyan Black Pottery products are vigorous in carving, classical and graceful in design. They look glistening black. When under different light and from different angles, their color change into black, purple, grey and blue, sparkling. A light knock will produce a pleasant sound. A holiday centerpiece would make a wonderful focal point or main decoration for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's and other holiday occasions. You can place the centerpiece on your table, entryway table or other large area or space.

Plus there are limitless ways to make your centerpiece special. You can mix-and-match festive objects you have around your house with materials from a craft or fabric store and even add them to wonderful creations from online stores. Then design and create coordinating pieces for nearby countertop or the mantle over the fire place, front porch or other area.

Some mix-and-match ideas include:

Fall Vegetables

Begin with a pumpkin and gourds. Loosely arrange them on the table or mantle. Set a natural-color candle on each side of your display. Finish your free form art center piece by sprinkling colorful fall leaves all over and around your center pieces. Make sure they are not too close to the candles, of course.

Fall & Winter Leaves & Berries

Simply find a large glass bowl and fill it with beautiful fall leaves or holly leaves and berries. Set a candle on each side of the bowl to showcase the leaves. Then, cut leaf shapes out of construction paper and use them as place cards. Of course you could also press small leaves, and glue them to a plain white place card.

Floral Display of Abundance

Make a dried floral arrangement from fall and winter flowers. Gather some of the plastic sticks that the florists use to hold notecards. Stick them into the floral display, but put photos of the things you are thankful for in them, instead. Or, if you don't have photos, just write words on notecards and display them in the floral arrangement. Some words you may start with are "family", "friends", "food", "laughter".

Carve A Pumpkin

Yes, you heard right, carve a pumpkin. Of course you don't want to go with the traditional jack-o-lantern design here. Instead carve some geometrical designs, or some flowers, leaf-shapes etc. on your hollowed out pumpkin. Add a candle inside the carved pumpkin and light it just before your guests arrive.

Holiday Candle Holders

Get some small pumpkins, Christmas or other candle holders and tiny candles to use with them. Group of few of these candle holders together for a festive center piece. Finish your candle arrangement with a few pieces of native corn or festive ornaments placed around your holiday candle holders. Give the arrangement more dimension by using different size pumpkins, ornaments and candles. Use some scented candles to give your room that Holiday smell.

Dig through your holiday supplies or take a stroll through your local craft store and you will come up with your own versions of these suggestions, or even a creation all your own.

It has come to my attention that many of my readers have very little information when it comes to wall lighting. I get contacted all the time by my friends in cyberspace who would like to have a general idea of what is available to them in the form of wall lighting. Some of them go as far as to tell me what room they intend to install wall lights and include the theme or style of room decor, so I am able to suggest the wall lighting best to fill their needs.

This is what gave me the idea to write this information on wall lighting. I’m hoping this information will reach those of you who are eager to learn more on this subject and take advantage of what is available to you in the world of wall lighting fixtures.

I’m going to start out by giving you a list of suggested rooms and walls that are quite appropriate to accommodate wall lighting. Although this is a comprehensive list, you may be able to come up with other walls in which to install wall lighting.

You may want to consider installing wall lighting fixtures on walls in the following: Bathroom, Bedroom, Breakfast Room, Closet, Den, Dining Room, EntryFoyer, Exterior, Family Room, Garage, Hall, Kitchen, Living Room, Mudroom, Office, Patio, Porch, Study and Walkway.

Now, switching over to the styles available to you, you will see that the variety is abundant. This is by no means all that there is available in wall lighting styles, but this will give you a good idea of what you have to choose from. Also, the information I will provide to you will include indoor and outdoor wall lighting fixtures.
